How to check boiler age

How Old is My Boiler?

Boilers are crucial in our homes, especially during the winter months. They provide the warmth and comfort we need to stay cosy when the temperatures drop. However, one common issue many homeowners face is the boiler breakdown. This can occur for various reasons, such as lack of maintenance, servicing, or the boiler’s age.

If your boiler is getting faulty more frequently, then one question you should ask is how old my boiler is. As boilers age, they tend to require more frequent repairs, which can become costly. So, how can you determine if your boiler is old?

If your boiler is ten years or older, consider investing in a new one. If you are unsure of the age of your boiler because it was pre-installed in the property you purchased, there are ways to determine its exact age. Keep reading this blog as we will discuss how you can accurately determine the age of your boiler.

How to check the age of your boiler

The easiest method to determine the age of your boiler is to locate the boiler serial number. This unique combination of numbers and letters in the form of a barcode is specific to your boiler. If you have the installation manual, you can find the boiler serial number age on the exterior casing of the boiler.

However, if you do not have the manual on hand, you can typically find the serial number underneath the boiler, behind a drop-down front panel, or on the side of the unit. This serial number will indicate the year of manufacture for your boiler.

I still can’t find the serial number; what should I do?

If the above steps do not resolve the issue, you can try several other methods. First, turn off the power to your boiler and remove the cover to locate the serial number inside the cabinet, typically found on a sticker or metal plate. If you do not have the installation manual, try finding the owner’s manual, as it contains essential information regarding your boiler and its maintenance.

Additionally, utilise online resources to find your manufacturer, as many offer tools where you can input the boiler’s model number to retrieve manufacturing date information.

If none of these steps prove successful, contact your manufacturer’s customer support for further assistance, with contact information readily available online.

How do you find the age of different boiler brands?

If you are looking to calculate the age of a particular brand of boiler, then the process may vary depending on certain brands. Below, I will mention how to find your age for top brands.

How Old is my Ideal Boiler?

If you are seeking to determine the age of a specific boiler brand, the process may vary depending on the brand. Below, I will outline how to ascertain the age of top brands.

You can determine the exact age of Ideal boilers by referencing the benchmark certificate in the installation manual. If you do not have the installation manual, locate the serial number to find the manufacturing date, typically on the top or underneath the boiler.

The location of the serial number varies depending on the type of Ideal boiler you own, which I will detail below:

Ideal Mini

Ideal Mini boilers are smaller in size compared to regular boilers. While most boilers feature the year and week of manufacturing, Ideal Mini boilers display the month and year in the last four digits of the serial number.

For example, if the last four digits of the serial number are 0609, this indicates that the boiler was manufactured in June 2009.

Ideal Logic and Ideal M

If you have an Ideal Logic or an Ideal M series boiler, you can find the serial number as a barcode sticker on the top of your boiler. The barcode will consist of a 24-25 digit number divided into three parts, and the last two parts will tell you about the boiler’s age.

You will find the serial number at the very end; generally, boilers manufactured before 2015 have a date formatted as YY/MM/DD, and those manufactured after 2015 have a date formatted as DD/MM/YY.

Ideal Classic Boiler

If you have an Ideal Classic boiler, the serial number is displayed on a barcode sticker at the top of your boiler. The Ideal Classic boiler’s serial number is shorter, consisting of 17 or 18 numbers. The serial number will be divided into four clusters, and the manufacturing date can be found in the third cluster, representing the year and week of manufacturing.

For example, if the serial number reads UZ 202034 0710 00149, the third cluster will be 0710, indicating that the boiler was manufactured in 2010, the 10th week.

How Old is my Baxi Boiler?

If you have a Baxi boiler, locating the serial number is quite simple, as it will be on the sticker on the top of the front of the boiler within the interface’s drop-down panel. However, suppose your boiler was manufactured after 2003. In that case, the serial number’s 4th and 5th digits will represent the year of manufacturing, and the 6th and 7th digits will represent the week of the year it was manufactured.

For example, the serial number reads BCP080900266ZX, so the 4th and 5th digits indicate that the boiler was manufactured in 2008, and the 6th and 7th digits indicate that it was manufactured in the 9th week of the year.

If your boiler is older than 2003, you can provide the serial number to Baxi by contacting them at 0330 678 0917, and they will give you details related to the manufacturing date.

How old is my Worcester Bosch Boiler?

If you have a Worcester Bosch Boiler, then unfortunately, you won’t be able to find the serial number as they were designed for internal use. But no need to worry, as you can retrieve the manufacturing date by contacting the Worcester Bosch customer support team at 03301233366.

They will ask you for details, so you must keep a record related to your Worcester boiler, including make, model, installation, or service record, to be guided more conveniently.

Not only that, but this information can also help you retrieve information regarding your boilers via the Industry Database. While it might not provide the exact date, it can give you an approximate estimation.

How old is my Vaillant Boiler?

If you have a Vaillant boiler, you will easily find the sticker with the serial number on it either on the boiler itself or inside the front panel. Once you locate the serial number, you will need to find the 3rd and 4th digits, as they will indicate the year of manufacturing; suppose the 3rd and 4th digits are 0 and 5, which suggests the boiler was manufactured in 2005.

How old is my Vokera Boiler?

If you have a Vokera boiler, you will first need to find your serial number, which will be found on a silver data plate under the boiler. The serial number will consist of sixteen digits and one letter. The first eight digits are the boiler model number, while the letter and the following numbers refer to the month and the on which the boiler was manufactured.

Always remember the serial number will never start with a number sequence; if you see the number at the beginning of the serial number, then it is the barcode and not the serial number.

Signs Indicating that Your Boiler is Getting Old?

A person is checking a boiler

Above, I have mentioned how to determine the age of your boiler by locating the serial number. But how do you know if your boiler is getting old or not? Here are a few signs that indicate boiler replacement:

  • The boiler needs to improve efficiency, resulting in an improper supply of hot water and heating. Boilers older than years tend to lose efficiency and have an efficiency rating of less than 70%, whereas the new boilers’ efficiency rating is around 90% to 95%.
  • Your boiler demands frequent repairs, often costing you a lot on component replacements and servicing. |
  • Your boiler is making strange noises, such as clanking, whistling, and banging, which indicate loose parts or a build-up of limescale within the boiler.
  • Your boiler is leaking water too much.
