National Home Security Month: Simple tricks to step up your home security
Is your home burglar-proof? In the spirit of National Home Security Month, here at 24|7 Home Rescue, we’ve put together some really easy tips to upgrade your security and keep the thieves out!
Light up
Install lights to illuminate the outside areas around your home. Not only will it put off burglars, but it can also make moving outside your home at night much safer. Motion-sensor lights will make thieves uneasy and distressed, but they are also the most efficient and will cost you less money to maintain.
Keys
A lot burglars break into homes purely motivated by the cars sat outside of it. Make it a routine to take your car keys upstairs to bed with you at night. It’s highly unlikely that the burglars will want to test their luck upstairs.
Get a dog
If you do decide to invest in a four-legged friend, don’t rely on them. Whilst they are an effective deterrent for startling thieves, not all dogs are unfriendly to strangers or would even alert if someone was to break in. If you don’t want to buy a dog, you can buy warning signs to place outside your home that suggest you have a dog, whether you do or not.
CCTV
This option is becoming more popular as costs decline and it becomes more accessible in terms of domestic security. Lots of people in the past have used fake CCTV cameras – just to warn burglars off. But now, it may be worth sparing a little more money to invest in actual CCTV.
Alarms
Getting an effective burglar alarm installed in your home will scare away any thieves at their exact point of entry, forcing them to leave with nothing. If you’re a heavy sleeper, it’s also the most likely way to be alerted when someone breaks in.
Having a CCTV system paired with an alarm system in your home has also been proven to help reduce home insurance premiums.
Not-so empty homes
If you’re on a two-week holiday or just running some errands, it’s important not to advertise your absence. Try not to leave notes on the front door for delivery men, and set timers for your lights and electricity to come on and off at random points throughout the day.
Think like a thief
Walk around your home, both inside and outside, looking for easy points of access or weaknesses in your security. It’s surprising how simply putting yourself in the shoes of a burglar can help you notice things about your home you haven’t noticed or thought of before.
