What should you do if you smell gas?

Safety is of the utmost importance if you smell gas. Check that you’ve turned off your gas appliances; if you still smell gas, then there is probably a gas leak.

You should call the National Gas Emergency Line on 0800 111 999 to report the problem.

You can call this number 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; a gas leak is considered an emergency and you should receive prompt assistance, with an engineer isolating your gas supply.

You should also call the National Gas Emergency Line in the event of other gas problems, including suspected carbon monoxide leaks and disruption to your gas supply.

You will be asked a series of questions by the National Gas Emergency Service. These could include:

  • What is your full name, address, and phone number?
  • How long have you been smelling gas and suspecting a problem?
  • Where is the possible gas leak emergency?
  • Where do you think the leak is coming from? Can you smell gas from the boiler?
  • Do you know if your neighbours are experiencing any problems?

If you have home emergency cover with 24|7 Home Rescue, contact us after you have spoken to the National Gas Emergency Service and we will sent round a Gas Safe-registered engineer to repair the damaged pipework and make your home safe again.

Whilst Waiting For an Engineer, Follow This Advice if You Smell Gas

In the meantime, keep yourself and your family safe with the following tips:

  • Turn off your internal gas supply pipe and leave it turned off until the National Gas Emergency Service has told you it is safe to turn it on again.
  • Open your windows and doors to allow fresh air into your house and to allow the gas to escape.
  • Don’t use any electrical appliances; don’t even turn your lights on (or off).
  • Don’t use any other electrical items.
  • Avoid open flames by not smoking, using candles, or lighting matches.

The National Gas Emergency Service has a helpline where people will walk you through the safety steps that are right for your gas leak. This way, you can be sure that you are not in any extra danger.

The National Gas Emergency Service will try to handle all uncontrolled gas leaks in just one hour and all controlled gas leaks—or leaks when the gas supply has been turned off and there is no smell—in two hours.

In the majority of cases, they will make the property safe again but will not repair the gas appliance or pipework that led to the leak; you will need to arrange these repairs yourself.
