Home RepairHow-To GuidesThe washing machine is not rinsing the clothes

Updated on 13th December, 2022 by Martin Astley

If your washing machine is not rinsing, you might need to call in the experts to repair the appliance.

But you may be able to speed up your repair if you find out what the source of the problem is. The team at 247 Home Rescue has taken a look at some of the most common causes of rinsing problems in washing machines.

Broken timer switch

If your washing machine can still rinse but does not reach the rinse cycle without you manually turning the knob, then your timer switch is probably broken. The gears leading to the knob will be worn, may be missing teeth, or may simply be dirty and grimy.

In some cases, this problem can be resolved by simply cleaning the gears, but if the gears are broken, you will need to replace the gear assembly and will need to hire an expert to undertake the washing machine repair.

Broken pump

If the pump is not working properly, then water may not be able to pass through the rinse tube and reach your drum. You may be able to take off the washing machine cover yourself to take a look at the pump and hose to see if there are any kinks or blockages within them.

However, if the pump and hose are not clogged but the pump is not working, you will need to replace this component and fit it properly. Again, it is almost certain that you will need an expert’s help if you are to replace the pump without causing additional damage to the appliance.

Broken door

Washing machines typically refuse to operate if the door is not closed properly or if the sensors within the machine do not think the door is properly closed. The switches and latches on washing machine doors are usually very sturdy and resilient, but overloading the appliance, slamming the door too hard, or everyday wear and tear can damage these latches and cause them to fail.

You may need to fit a replacement washing machine door. If you try to jimmy the door back into place, then the washing machine may begin to rinse again, but the door could easily fly open, soaking your floor and throwing your clothes across the kitchen.

Damaged water inlet valve

The water inlet valve in your washing machine may have become damaged or blocked, which will stop water from flowing from your plumbing supply into the appliance. You will need to replace this valve with the right component for your washing machine.

Need an appliance engineer?

Don’t forget, we offer cover for a range of household appliances to ensure you have peace of mind should yours ever suffer a breakdown. Please contact us via our website or on 0345 3192 247 to find out more. Or call us today for urgent assistance. Our technical teams will run through some simple diagnostics to see if it can be fixed over the phone, and if not, they’ll send a manufacturer engineer where possible to take a look.

Don’t attempt to repair the appliance yourself unless you’re really confident in what you’re doing. A number of things could go wrong, including jamming, electrocution, burns, scalds, cuts, and much more. We’ve got a number of highly skilled engineers up and down the country, so you’ll never be far from help when you need it most.

247 Home Rescue accepts no liability for any injuries or damages you sustain following the advice on this website. If in doubt, seek professional assistance.
