Boiler breakdowns are a big concern for Brits this winter, with research from GoCompare.com discovering that one-quarter of people are worried that their boiler will stop working in the coming months.
But many people may not be doing all they can to avoid this home emergency; GoCompare.com’s ‘boiler trouble’ survey also found that while more than half (56%) of respondents have had their boiler serviced in the last 12 months, 11% have never had their boiler serviced, while 9% haven’t had it serviced for more than 24 months. Boilers should be serviced annually to ensure that they are working safely and efficiently and that they are not going to break down in the immediate future.
Cost of boiler repairs
The comparison website’s research also revealed that the average repair cost following a boiler breakdown is £469, with 12% of people who had experienced boiler trouble in the last three years spending more than £1,000. However, when asked how they would cope with a relatively-modest £300 boiler repair bill, just 23% of respondents said they have boiler cover to protect them should this occur, 27% said they had enough cash set aside, and 10% said they would use their credit card.
How commonplace are boiler breakdowns?
The study revealed that boiler breakdowns are far more commonplace than some might hope, with 42% of respondents experiencing a broken boiler in the last three years.
Of these:
- 19% required emergency boiler repairs
- 54% needed minor repairs
- 22% required a boiler replacement
GoCompare.com energy spokesman Jeremy Cryer said boilers are among the most expensive items in the home to repair or replace.
Nonetheless, many don’t think about their boilers at all until they appliance lets them down, he added.
He said the staff at GoCompare.com “strongly advise” people to get their central heating system checked annually.
