There’s a considerable lack of scientific evidence to suggest that today is in fact, the dullest of the year. ‘Blue Monday’ is a concept created by a British travel company way back in 2005 based on factors such as weather, debts and post-Christmas gloominess. If, much like myself, you’re already feeling defeated by Blue Monday, here are some things you can do to combat it head-on!
1. Smile
Even if it’s a fake smile, smiling has been proven to help reduce stress by releasing endorphins and relaxing the facial muscles. It sends more oxygen to the brain, giving you that feel-good factor… and not only that, but it’s also contagious – so you can help everyone around you beat their Blue Monday blues too!
2. Exercise
Much like smiling, exercising also releases endorphins, making you feel on top of the world even on a day like Blue Monday. Why not get yourself to a gym class or take your dog on a run? Remember: the hardest part is getting out of the door! Besides, it is January after all…
3. Just get outdoors
Make a conscious effort to arrange plans outside today or tonight. Natural light also triggers endorphins (again!) and other hormones that’ll help improve your mood. If you absolutely have to be stuck inside all day, don’t let that stop you. Keep the curtains or blinds in every room wide open and keep the windows ajar to let the fresh air in.
4. Random acts of kindness
Help spread positive vibes on this dull day by doing a ‘random act of kindness’. It’s not only going to help spruce up someone else’s Blue Monday, but you’ll also feel better about yourself for doing so. Give to the homeless. Pay for the person behind you in the coffee shop. Pay someone an unexpected compliment.
5. Plan ahead
Take 10 minutes to think to yourself – what are you looking forward to? It could be short term or long term. Are you excited to see a family member or friend at the weekend? Do you have a summer holiday to look forward to? If not, why? Get planning a reunion with that long-lost friend or put down a deposit for a short city break. Just keep looking forward!
