Almost half of all house fires are caused by electrical accidents and emergencies, with these taking the lives of around one person every week. Using unsafe electricians for electrical repairs dramatically increases a person’s likelihood of becoming one of these victims.
The government is aware of the dangers unqualified electricians pose, and is considering enhancing Part P regulations – something home emergency cover specialist 247 Home Rescue supports. But are British consumers even aware of Part P regulations? Are people willing to put their lives at risk by using unqualified tradesmen for electrical emergency repairs?
Home emergency cover – many Brits fail to check electricians’ credentials
Research from the Electrical Safety Council (ESC) revealed that nearly one-quarter of people have arranged and paid for work with electricians without checking the electrician’s credentials first. Furthermore, one third of people have simply used a friend’s recommendations when booking an electrician, while another quarter said they would knowingly hire an unqualified electrician if they were in a hurry.

People who need electrical repairs performed quickly could easily shoot themselves in the foot by using an unqualified electrician. The ESC discovered that almost 1.3 million people in the UK needed to pay a professional to fix an unqualified electrician’s botched works, illustrating that using unqualified electricians can easily lead to protracted delays rather than speed the process up.
But it’s not just consumers who are dissatisfied with the poor work of unqualified electricians; professionals are also complaining about the shoddy and dangerous work they have to deal with. A third of registered electricians polled by the ESC said that they have noticed the amount of dangerous and substandard electrical work rise since 2012.
Qualified electricians also highlighted the risk people face when using builders or other traders to choose electricians on a customer’s behalf. This is particularly the case in rooms such as the bathroom or kitchen, where water and electricity outlets may be near to each other and where the risk of an electric breakdown or an electric home emergency is the highest.
