There’s a ‘polar vortex’ on its way to us that is set to create a six inch layer of snow by tomorrow morning.
Experts have warned that the adverse weather conditions symbolise just the start of what could be the coldest winter in Britain in five years.
Here’s some ways that you can best prepare for the big freeze:
Stay updated
Make sure you have access to the internet or a radio so that you can get regular information updates about the weather. Getting up extra early to tune into the local radio station may help you to avoid a major traffic accident on your morning commute and find out which schools are closed.
Stock up
It’s unlikely you will need it this week, but the unpredictability of British weather means it’s best to be prepared nonetheless. Make sure you stock up on essentials such as pet food and medication to stop you making unnecessary trips on icy roads. For information on what to include in your home emergency kit, click here.
Keep the car in check
It’s recommended that you check your car’s anti-freeze levels, battery, brakes, exhaust, heater, lights, oil, tyres and wipers before it’s covered in snow, or at least before you set off to work. Make sure you have a scraper handy and wake up with enough time in hand to allow your car to defrost.
Bring in the pets
If you have pets that live outside, such as rabbits, bring their hutch into the house. They don’t necessarily need to be in the living room next to the fire, but somewhere sheltered such as a garage. If you have livestock, make sure that they are also sheltered inside, and that all animals have access to non-frozen water.
